Work From Home Typing Jobs

Many work from home jobs center around typing or data entry skills. Typing jobs include clerical work, typing correspondence and filling in forms; medical transcriptionist, typing medical information from dictation; and data entry or word processing jobs.

In addition to entering new information on a form or in a computer, data entry or typing jobs often require people to work with existing data. This may mean proofreading or editing information for accuracy. The U.S. Department of Labor notes, “Some workers in this occupation telecommute, working from their homes on personal computers linked by telephone lines to those in the main office. This arrangement enables them to key in material at home while still being able to produce printed copy in their offices.”

There are requirements for typing or data entry jobs from home. A good computer with Internet access is needed, as is faxing capabilities. You might also want to consider the ability to remotely-access your computer in case you need it and a good spyware program. You may even have to pass a typing test.

Don’t expect to get rich doing data entry, but don’t be surprised if you are asked about previous experience. Often the jobs are locally based to avoid sending irreplaceable source material out to an unknown person far away. It is important, however, to be aware of scams in typing or date entry positions. Also consider ergonomics, long periods of typing can result in stress on your wrists and potential long-term problems. Make sure your workstation at home is comfortable and protects you against repetitive strain injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
