Virtual Assistance as a Home Based Business

If you want a job that pays well and lets you build a good network, wouldn’t you rather have one that you can do at home? Consider a career as a virtual assistant – a job that allows you to make use of your skills and training and still let you earn a good income. The increase in the demand for skilled VAs is a good indication that you can turn this career into a good-paying home-based business.

Becoming a VA
If the job title itself is not a giveaway, then consider the careers of an office assistant, researcher and secretary all rolled into one. As a virtual assistant, you will be working and communicating with your client on a project basis. Sometimes, some clients might want to hire you over longer periods, from six months to a year, even more.

Virtual assistants write letters, edit communications, take phone calls, handle bulk mailings, do research, perform basic financial management and manage their client's schedules. It can also require certain tasks such as information processing, legal or medical transcription, article writing, bookkeeping, event planning, public relations even consultations. It all depends on what your client needs and what types of services you can offer.

As a VA, you will be working as a home-based independent contractor.

Requirements for VAs
If you want to set up a home-based business involving virtual assistance, you will need several things, such as:

- a fast, reliable computer
- a fast Internet connection (preferably broadband)
- office equipment (such as fax machines, printers, scanners, etc.) and supplies
- a dedicated phone line

Some training may also be required on your part as a virtual assistant. Some clients, for example, prefer VAs who have undergone formal training and certification. There are also others who would require their VAs to have certain skills, such as technical writing, computer graphics, web design or the like.

Virtual assistance as a home-based business requires a good amount of motivation and dedication on your part. But if you're really good at it and have the experience to match, being a VA can be an excellent source of regular income.
